Amsterdam, a city of winding canals and historic charm, holds secrets beyond its bustling streets. One such hidden gem is Vuurtoreneiland, also known as Lighthouse Island, which is a place where gastronomy meets adventure.
Vuurtoreneiland is a unique natural treasure located in Amsterdam. Nestled in a rugged landscape, it features roaming animals, rare flora, a decaying fort, and Amsterdam’s sole lighthouse. Situated in the Markermeer near Durgerdam, Vuurtoreneiland is accessible only by boat. During spring and summer, guests dine in the transparent glass greenhouse of the summer restaurant, sheltered from wind and rain, enjoying “food in and from nature.” In colder months, the winter restaurant provides intimacy and warmth with a fireplace and blankets. The table d’hôte menu showcases regional ingredients, traditional craftsmanship, and open-fire cooking. Dining at Vuurtoreneiland isn’t just an ordinary evening out—it’s an adventurous mini-vacation. The island experience begins at The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam, where you board the historic ‘IJveer XIII’ for a scenic voyage across the IJ to Vuurtoreneiland. The round-trip boat journey, including dinner, lasts approximately 5 hours. Once on-site, explore the island, nature, and the fort.
The Journey Begins: From the moment we stepped onto the ferry, our senses were awakened, and our taste buds primed for an unforgettable experience. Our seats were assigned, and when we found our table and took our seats, unbeknown to us, we were surprisingly served a charcuterie board adorned with summer sausage, local cheeses, and dried fruits. There was also a bar on board serving champagne and cocktails. As the boat glided across the IJmeer, anticipation filled the air. The water sparkled, reflecting the sun’s golden rays. We exchanged excited glances, wondering what awaited us on this tiny island.
After an hour’s journey, Vuurtoreneiland emerged—a lush oasis with a white lighthouse standing sentinel. It felt like stepping into a fairytale. Before being escorted to the restaurant, we are given a tour of the island. On the island, sheep graze freely, adding to the rustic charm. Their presence connects us to the land and its history. We also paid a visit to the island’s wine cellar and passed by the lighthouse upon our arrival at the see-through glass structure that would be our dining quarters for the evening.
The Setting: Wooden tables adorned with candles, soft music, and the scent of herbs from the island’s garden—rustic elegance at its finest. Durgerdam, a Dutch village situated along the dyke of the IJmeer, loomed across the water, adding to the magic. The warmth from the open fire, chatter in the air, and drinks being poured began the experience as everyone in the greenhouse eagerly awaited what was to come.
The Culinary Journey: The six-course dinner was a revelation. Each dish, meticulously crafted, was a work of art. From the delicate seafood appetizer to the rich, slow-cooked lamb, our taste buds were full of contentment. The chef’s commitment to local, seasonal ingredients was evident. We savored every bite, immersed in a cocktail of flavors.
Wine Pairing: Elevating the Experience: the sommelier guided us through wine pairings that elevated the meal. Crisp Sauvignon Blanc danced with scallops, while robust reds complemented tender beef. It wasn’t just about sustenance; it was a sensory journey—a celebration of taste and aroma.
Impeccable Service: Attentive and Genuine: The staff anticipated our needs, sharing island stories and the inspiration behind each dish. Their passion was contagious. We felt like honored guests, not mere diners.
The Farewell: A Bittersweet Moment: After a 3-hour unique and exceptional evening, it was time to say goodbye (for now) to an island that had just created one of my most memorable dining experiences. As we boarded the ferry back to Amsterdam, the city lights twinkling in the distance, we knew we had experienced something truly remarkable. However, we were unaware that the journey was to be continued. After being served two desserts on the island to conclude our meal, we were served yet another dessert back on the boat—we enjoyed cake, coffee, and champagne. As the boat pulled into the dock back in Amsterdam, we said our last goodbyes to all whom we had made friends with onboard, got in our rental car, and rode off into the night.
Vuurtoreneiland wasn’t just a meal but a journey—a sensory exploration of taste, nature, and human connection.
Pro Tip: Make your reservation today for a special night that makes you forget everything around you.
