Ibiza Travel Guide
About Ibiza
Sunny, loud, and luxurious, but also mystical, wild, and introspective: despite its relatively small surface area (around 572 km², or about 35 km long and 30 km wide), Ibiza is a true microcosm in itself. It can offer its visitors much more than its reputation as a “party island” might suggest.
From the untamed beaches in the Northern part of the island to the glamorous clubs located on the waterfront of San Antoni de Portmany and the cultural and historical sites of Dalt Vila and Ca Saleta, everyone can unearth the personality of Ibiza that best suits its idea of “perfect vacation.”
Five are the major resorts on this chameleonic island bathed by the calm and crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, which -together with its “sisters” Formentera, Mallorca, and Minora- is part of the so-called Balearic island, an archipelago in the southwestern part of Spain: Eivissa, Sant Antony de Portmany, Santa Eularia des Riu, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, and Sant Joan de Labritja.
Located on the Southern part of the island is the capital, Eivissa (or Ibiza Town), renowned all over the world for its exceptional historic center, Dalt Vila, declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1999 and characterized by picturesque white houses, which have owed Ibiza the name of “the White Island,” for the ancient Phoenician necropolis of Puig des Molins, located just a few meters away from the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa (MACE), for the charming residential neighborhoods of La Marina e Sa Penya, and internationally-renowned clubs such as Pacha, Amnesia, and Ushuaia.
On the western side is the second most prominent resort on the island, Sant Antoni de Portmany. This party hub of Ibiza is home to countless glamorous clubs, which become the playground of DJs such as David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Kygo, and Martin Garrix every summer.
With charming restaurants and cafes overlooking the harbor, traditional artisanal boutiques, hippie markets, and white sandy beaches, Santa Eularia is the perfect destination for families, couples, and those looking for peace away from the most crowded resorts on the island.
Finally, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the quintessential Ibizan atmosphere in Sant Josep de sa Talaia and Sant Joan de Labritja, located respectively on the southern and northern extremities of the island, as well as in the charming village of Sant Jordi de ses Salines. They can get lost among the colors and scents of the traditional food and hippie markets organized all along their main streets.
The beauty of Ibiza lies precisely in the vast diversity of landscapes, people, and cultures that harmoniously coexist on such a small territory bathed by the waters of the most ancient sea in the world, the Mediterranean.
Best Time To visit
With mild Winters and pleasantly warm Summers, Ibiza is blessed with a Mediterranean climate all year round. There is little to no rainfall and an average of 300 days of sun per year. That said, some months are certainly better for planning your Ibizan vacation!
In particular, it is during the late Spring (late April to mid-June) and early Fall (mid-September to October) months that Ibiza gives its best to visitors: the temperatures are pleasantly mild, with a daily average of 23-24°C (73-75°F), and the island is not stormed by the hordes of party lovers as during peak Summer months (July and August). This means you can quickly move around the island, relax, and enjoy some privacy on one of its mesmerizing beaches.
On the other hand, Winters in Ibiza are characterized by higher average daytime temperatures than in different parts of the Spanish territory, with maximum peaks of 17ºC (62°F) and minimum temperatures that do not usually drop below 10ºC (50°F). Traveling to Ibiza during the Christmas and holiday season -or generally during November, December, January, and February- might still be a good idea, but some restaurants and luxury resorts might close during the off-season months.
Overall, if we had to choose the perfect month to visit Ibiza, it would be May. The restaurants and clubs are starting to reopen after the Winter closure, but the island is less packed than during peak months. Everyone is excited for the beginning of the Summer season, and the mild temperatures make for the perfect conditions for hiking along one of the beautiful cliff sides on the Western and Northern parts of the island. Plus, if you are lucky enough, you can enjoy a rejuvenating swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. What could be more perfect than this?
What to expect
A vacation in Ibiza is an unforgettable experience: the island has a magnetic vibe that attracts even the most skeptical traveler, while its louder and more energetic side makes it very difficult to leave this enchanting place.
After all, already in the past, very few have been able to resist the allure of the White Island: during the centuries preceding the birth of Christ, Ibiza was already considered a major stopover point by several Ancient civilizations, including the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, who later established the first major human settlement on the island, the port city of Ibosim, today known as Dalt Vila (the oldest part of Eivissa), a strategic and commercial fortress for their trade routes through the Mare Nostrum. Testifying Ibiza’s ancient commercial past are the numerous bastions and lighthouses standing on the island’s most strategic spots, such as the Torre de Portinatx and the Torre des Molar. Since then, the island has witnessed the passage of different civilizations, from the Romans to the Moorish, the Turkish, and, eventually, the Catholic rulers of Spain, who then annexed it to the mainland.
However, it was only in the 1960s that Ibiza became famous worldwide. First, it became renowned for its flourishing hippie movement (fun fact: here, you can find one of the first nudist beaches in Europe, Es Cavellet), which contributed to the mystical, untamed, and esoteric atmosphere you can still breathe on the island. A couple of years later, it became famous for its thriving clubbing scene, which earned it the title of “party mecca” of Europe.
Today, Ibiza has become the perfect destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world, who are drawn every year to the island both for its pleasant climate, mesmerizing hidden coves and beaches- among which are Cala Boix, Cala Bassa, Cala d’en Serra, Cala Comte, and Cala Saladeta, to name a few-, the pristine nature which still dominates the northernmost part of the island, the breathtaking the spectacle of the sun setting behind the Es Vedrà atoll, but also for its rich cultural and artistic past, testified by the ancient Phoenician necropolis of Puig Des Molins and the Moorish walls of Dalt Vila, and -of course- the incredible music festival that animates the waterfront during the Summer months.
Ibiza is home to some of the world’s most luxurious resorts, such as the spectacular Six Senses. Located on Xarraca Bay, on the northern tip of the island, this 5-star resort has become an institution in recent years in the health and wellness space for its ability to integrate comfort and modernity with profound spiritual experiences rooted in Ibizan music, art, and culture.
Things to know
Here are a couple of essential things to keep in mind when traveling to Ibiza:
- Language: While Castilian Spanish is the principal language spoken in most parts of the Spanish territory, the official language of Ibiza is Catalan Spanish or, more specifically, a regional variant of it, also known as Eivissenc or Ibicenco. However, it is not uncommon to find bilingual road signs with both Castillian and Catalan names. In addition, people generally speak—or at least understand—both languages.
- Common Sayings: Some common sayings in Catalan and Castilian are helpful in everyday situations.
Good Morning – Bon dia – Buen día
Good Afternoon – Bon Tarda – Buenas tardes
Good Night – Bona nit – Buenas noches
Please – Si us plau – Es un placer conocerte
Thanks – Gracies or Merci – Gracias
Nice to meet you – Moit de gust – Encantado de conocerte
What ‘s your name? – Com et dius? – ¿Cómo te llamas?
My name is Anna- Em dic Anna – Me llamo Anna
Where are you from? – D’on ets? – De dónde eres
Do you speak English? – Parla angles? – ¿Hablas inglés?
A table for two please – Una taula per dos si us plau – Una mesa para dos por favor
Bon appetit! – Bon profit! – ¡Buen provecho!
The bill please – El comte si us plau – La cuenta, por favor
That was delicious! – Estava bonissim! – ¡Eso estuvo delicioso!
- Time Zone: Ibiza is on Central European Time (CET), which is six hours ahead of New York (EST) and one hour ahead of London (GMT).
- Currency: Spain belongs to the so-called “Eurozone,” which means that the currency in Ibiza is the Euro (EUR). Although credit cards are accepted in most places nowadays, it’s always a good idea to have some cash with you, especially for purchases in small shops or in one of the vibrant hippie markets that animate the island.
- Credit Cards: Credit cards (Visa, Amex, and Mastercard) are generally accepted in most restaurants, lounge bars, and shops. However, some of the most popular clubs and discos on the island might only accept credit or debit cards.
- Plugs + Voltage: Ibiza electrical outlets use plug types C (with two round pins) and F (with two round pins and two earth clips on the side). They operate on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.
- Airports: the only international airport on the island is the Aeroport d’Eivissa Sant Josep (IBZ), also serving the nearby island of Formentera, which is located in the small town of Sant Josep, about 7 km southwest of Eivissa (Ibiza Town). The airport is well-connected to all major centers on the island by bus. Alternatively, you can rent a car in one of the countless car rentals near the airport or take advantage of the efficient taxi fleet just outside the arrival terminal.
- Vegetarian and vegan food: despite being a relatively small island, Ibiza has no shortage of incredible vegan and vegetarian restaurants and cafes. Esfigueral, Mi Kasa, and Amor Crudo offer a wide selection of wholesome and scrumptious plant-based dishes with the best local and organic wines. Great vegan and vegetarian options can also be found at Skinny Kitchen, Eat is Life, and Aubergine Ibiza.
- Organic Groceries: Ibiza boasts an incredibly large number of farmers’ markets and eco-shops, selling the best local and organic fruit and veggies, fresh dairy products, grass-fed meat, vegan and cruelty-free make-up products, and clean household detergents. Amongst the most popular ones are Polen Ecoshop (located in the small town of Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera), Antigua Simbolica Tienda a Granel (in Sant Eulalia), and EcoFeixes (a cooperative of 14 small organic farms based in Eivissa).
- Safety: Ibiza is generally considered a safe island with a meager serious crime rate and a friendly local community. However, during Summer, the island attracts many international tourists, who might quickly become the preferred target for petty crimes and scams, especially in the most popular tourist centers, such as Eivissa, Sant Jordi, and Sant Antoni. To avoid getting entangled in unpleasant situations, some general recommendations are to stay away from the most crowded areas, always keep your most valuable objects -including your passport and ID card- close to you (or, even better, leave them in the safe of your hotel room) and, in case you decide to rent a car, avoid leaving any objects (even of little value) in plain sight on the seat.
- Opening Hours: shops in Ibiza are generally open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 8–9 pm, with some closing in the afternoon from 2 pm to 5 pm, especially during low season months. On the other hand, shops in the port area of Eivissa and along the main streets of Sant Jordi and Sant Antoni are generally open until midnight (or even later) during peak Summer months. Restaurants are usually open for lunch from 12 pm to 2.30- 3 pm and dinner from 7.30 pm to 11.30–12 pm. However, some restaurants and cafes might close during the off-season months and reopen only in April/May.
- Popular Sites: besides being one of the world’s most renowned “party islands,” Ibiza boasts a wide array of mesmerizing beaches -among which are Cala Boix, Cala Bassa, Cala d’en Serra, Cala Comte, and Cala Saladeta, just to name some of the most beautiful- and sites of historical and cultural interest, such as the old historical center of Eivissa (also known as Dalt Vila), the Phoenician settlement of Ca Saleta, and the cemetery of Puig des Molins, all of which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1999. Other must-sees include the natural park of Ses Salines, the mystical “Time and Space – The Rhythm of Life” installation, also known as the “Stonehenge of Ibiza,” a gigantic monument by Andrew Rogers, consisting of 13 basalt monoliths arranged in a circular design, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa (MACE), displaying works from world-renowned artists such as Will Faber, Don Kunkel, Tur Costa, Marcel Aoris, Adolfo Schlosser, Zush, Micus, and Marca-Relli.
how to get around
Despite being a relatively small island (its total area is 571.6 km², or around 35 km long and 20 kilometers wide), Ibiza has five major urban centers -Eivissa, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Santa Eularia des Riu, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, and Sant Joan de Labritja—as well as several smaller and picturesque villages.
Luckily, there are several quick and cost-effective ways to move from one resort to another, including buses, water taxis, bikes, scooters, and cars. Let’s look at each of these options in more detail.
- Public buses – One of the best ways to move around the island is definitely by bus: Ibiza boasts an efficient and well-organized public . . . .
- transportation system, with 34 bus lines regularly connecting the main towns of Eivissa, San Antonio, and Santa Eulalia to the different resorts and most popular beaches in the island, with the longest bus ride being around 35 minutes. Among the principal lines are the number 10 (Airport-Eivissa), the number 13 (Eivissa-Santa Eulalia), and the number 13 (Sant Antoni-Eivissa). Check out the Ibiza Bus website for more information about the bus lines and timetables. At the same time, heaps of disco buses connect the most popular clubs and the major urban centers during nighttime.
- Cars – Renting a car is another excellent way to explore Ibiza, as it allows you to follow your schedule and pace and reach almost every part of the island in less than half an hour. Car rentals are top-rated around the island, especially in the airport area (Sant Josep), and they generally offer free transfer services from the airport and back. The only downside is that it might be challenging to find a parking spot, especially during peak Summer months when tourists flood the island.
- Scooters—Renting a scooter has the same advantages as renting a car, but it is way easier to find a parking spot, especially near the most popular beaches and clubs. However, make sure to be familiar with driving a two-wheeled vehicle before deciding to hit the road with your rented scooter.
- Bikes – Exploring the island by bike is a great, eco-friendly, and convenient way of making the most of your Ibiza trip. Bike rentals are scattered around the major towns, with the possibility of taking part in organized bike tours.
- Water taxis – Water taxis are another popular way of moving around Ibiza and discovering parts of the island that would otherwise be impossible to reach by bike or car. The Sant Antoni waterside, Sant Eulalia, and the Ivissa harbor are three major departure points. Rides connect these locations with the nearby island of Formentera and the beautiful beaches of Talamanca, Figueretes, and Playa den Bossa.
- Walking – Lastly, a less popular yet most scenic way to explore Ibiza is on foot. Walking along one of the countless trails allows you to fully experience the island’s wildest, most naturalistic side and reach hidden coves and breathtaking viewpoints. Here are some of the best trekking routes and hikes on the island.
As you can see, there are convenient and eco-friendly options for thoroughly enjoying your Ibiza experience: all you have to do is choose the one that best suits your needs and degree of physical preparation.

what to experience
Carrer Codola 15, 07829, Illes Balears, Spain
Also known as “the Stonehenge of Ibiza,” Time and Space is a sensational installation designed by Australian sculptor Andrew Rogers, consisting of 13 basalt monoliths positioned . . . .
using the Fibonacci sequence to represent the solar system, with the central and tallest pillar capped in gold to symbolize the sun. The pillars stand on a rocky esplanade overlooking the secluded bay of Calla Llentia (on the Western side of the island), renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, with the flaming rays of the sun contributing to the mystical and solemn aurea the installation seems to evoke.

day trips
Ibiza – Formentera, Spain
Are you looking for an unforgettable day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Ibiza? Formentera is the answer! Even though Formentera is only ten nautical miles from the “White Island,” the mood . . .
and overall vibes are entirely different! While Ibiza is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and incredible beach resorts, Formentera is quieter, smaller, and generally less crowded. What does not change are the unbelievably crystal-clear waters, long white sandy beaches, and pristine vegetation. The only way to reach Formentera is by boat (docking at La Savina). The trip takes between 30 and 50 minutes (according to the shipping company), with regular routes organized throughout the year, especially during summer. Must-sees on the island are the incredible Platja de Llevant, one of the best beaches in the Balearic archipelago, the Faro del Cap de Barbaria, a lighthouse in the southernmost point of the island, defined as a place where “immense loneliness and freedom come together,” and the mesmerizing natural reserve of Ses Salines. The easiest and most convenient ways to move on the island are by bike or scooter, which can be rented on-site.
