  • Language: Turkish is the official language in Istanbul, but many locals speak English, especially in tourist areas.
  • Time zone: Istanbul is in the Eastern European Time Zone (GMT+3). It is 2 hours ahead of London, 7 hours ahead of New York, and 10 hours ahead of Los Angeles. 
  • Currency: The local currency is Turkish Lira (TRY).   • Airports: Istanbul has two international airports – Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport. To plan your transportation accordingly, check which airport your flight arrives/departs from.
  • Common sayings: It’s always helpful to know a few common phrases in the local language, such as “Merhaba” (Hello), “Teşekkür ederim” (Thank you), and “Güle güle” (Goodbye).
