Los Angeles Travel Guide

About Los Angeles

Los Angeles has a magical quality that has been drawing in everyone from hopeful movie stars and the musically gifted to scientists and intellectuals looking for an avant-garde enclave to call home. There’s no denying that this city has a mystifying allure. As the ancestral home of the Ventureño, Gabrieleño-Tongva, and Fernandeño peoples and first explored by Hernan Cortez’s men in the 1500s, Los Angeles is an evocative city that has stood the test of time and has evolved into a beautiful, multicultural fusion – from one of the largest Koreatowns in the world to Little Tokyo and the Hispanic enclave of Olvera Street, complete with the city’s oldest adobe home. For those seeking the best views in Los Angeles, the city’s diverse landscape offers breathtaking vistas from locations such as Griffith Observatory, Runyon Canyon, and the iconic Hollywood Sign, providing unparalleled perspectives of this vibrant metropolis.

The glitz and glamor of La La Land is a haven for wellness-focused getaways and those who seek alternative health treatments. From cryotherapy to beachside yoga, wellness seekers will be spoiled for choice and may discover something new in the city’s many spas and retreats. So whether you’re on a journey to nirvana through a juice cleanse, hot yoga, or meditation, Los Angeles takes health and healing seriously.

Best Time To visit

Los Angeles is considered a Mediterranean climate and doesn’t see the scorching summer temperatures of California’s desert regions. Cool and sunny weather prevails for much of the year, although rain and clouds do blow through in the winter months. Temperatures rarely drop below 50° or exceed 85°, although there are usually a few summer days that climb into the 90s.

The best time to visit L.A. is in the shoulder season of spring and fall, before the summer crowds descend on the city and while the weather is at its best. The spring months of March, April, and May and the fall months of September, October, and November are the best time to plan a trip to the City of Angels. Consider avoiding Los Angeles in June and July when temperatures heat up, and eager tourist hordes crowd the city. Seasonal winds known as El Niño and La Niña can cause L.A.’s weather to change drastically and heavy rains and cool weather to prevail. A quick internet search will reveal whether you need to pack the ponchos!

What to expect

Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States, a concrete jungle of almost 4 million strong, and one of the largest cultural hubs in America. From bustling Koreatown to Westlake, L.A. is the perfect destination for those who love to mix it up. The city of perpetual sun rarely sees precipitation, but evenings can be surprisingly cool.

Despite L.A.’s status as a staggering metropolis, the city has implemented many eco-friendly initiatives that help  reduce environmental impact, including solar energy, E.V. charging stations, and water conservation efforts, which are becoming increasingly vital with the city’s frequent droughts and lack of fresh water.

reduce environmental impact, including solar energy, E.V. charging stations, and water conservation efforts, which are becoming increasingly vital with the city’s frequent droughts and lack of fresh water.

Los Angeles also prides itself on a dedication to well-being and health and is one of the most innovative places in the country for advanced wellness treatments. Visitors can expect organic, fresh fare and natural wines on menus and a seemingly endless array of lush spas and cutting-edge treatments.

Things to know

Los Angeles is truly a sprawling urban city in every sense. Here are a few things to remember when planning your adventures in L.A.

Best Beaches in L.A.

A beach town through and through, Los Angeles is home to 75 miles of coastline stretching from Malibu in the south to Long Beach in the north. Largely regarded as the best beach in L.A., Santa Monica is a 3.5-mile stretch of sand punctuated by the iconic Santa Monica Pier. Relax in the soft, white powder and gaze out at the rolling hills.

Further up the coast, Manhattan Beach offers visitors a social scene with surfing and delicious restaurants lining the water. Be sure to stop in Malibu for its legendary palm trees and cliffs. Zuma, located just north of Malibu, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.

Best Sites for Film Lovers

Los Angeles is the premier locale for those who love movies and film or want to catch a fleeting glimpse of local celebrities. Go on a tour of the Warner Brothers Studios for a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to create a motion picture, or check out Dolby Theatre for a sneak peek at a bonafide Academy Awards. Cinephiles can pay their respects to thespians of old at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where the famous like Judy Garland and Toto are buried.

Los Angeles Viewpoints

No trip to L.A. would be complete without getting a birds-eye view of the sprawling city, stretching to the sparkling sea. Griffith Park is a fantastic place to see the skyline and the stars at the Griffith Observatory or get an up-close look at the Hollywood Sign! In addition, Runyon Canyon Park is a popular day-hike destination. It offers excellent views of downtown L.A., while Angel’s Point provides a unique perspective of the city’s cluster of skyscrapers from its perch in Elysian Park.

Famous Parks in Los Angeles

L.A.’s green spaces are a quiet respite from the energetic buzz of the city. Located right on the coast, Palisade Park is a gorgeous spot to sit in nature or take a stroll beneath swaying palms. Climb to dizzying heights in Elysian Park for an aerial perspective of Los Angeles and its hidden “secret swings” looking out at the cityscape below. Echo Park and Runyon Canyon are also great options for being in nature.

high-speed-train

how to get around

Los Angeles is an urban tangle of asphalt and skyscrapers sprawling from the Pacific Ocean to the famous hills surrounding the city. Driving can be hectic and plagued by intense traffic, while public transportation is notoriously slow and unorganized. Still, renting a car might be one of the best ways to get around this megalopolis. Many popular sites are spread far apart, making a car exceedingly useful. Avoid the peak rush of traffic when commuters are heading to and from work, and visitors should be able to navigate the city more efficiently. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are another great way to get around L.A. without worrying about parking fees and tickets.

If you’re searching for exercise on your trip, getting around Los Angeles by bicycle is a great way to see the city and get around quickly. Roller skating is another fun and exciting way to see L.A. and gives visitors an eccentric taste of a local pastime. If you’re arriving by plane to LAX, the best way to get to the city center quickly is by airport shuttle, which leaves every 35 minutes and runs 24/7.
