About St. Martin

St. Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean, about 300 km east of Puerto Rico. The island is split between two nations: the northern part, known as Saint-Martin, is a French overseas collectivity, while the southern part, Sint Maarten, is one of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This unique division gives the island a wonderful mix of European cultures and beautiful tropical scenery.

The island of St. Martin measures approximately 87 square kilometers, with Saint-Martin covering about 53 square kilometers and Sint Maarten encompassing around 34 square kilometers. St. Martin is renowned for its beautiful beaches, lush rolling hills, and vibrant coral reefs. This rich historical background is evident in the island’s diverse cultural influences and multilingual population.

The island hosts numerous festivals and events, such as Carnival and the Heineken Regatta, which showcase its lively music, dance, and cuisine. French Saint-Martin is known for its gourmet dining and chic boutiques, while Dutch Sint Maarten is famous for its nightlife, casinos, and duty-free Shopping.

Tourism is the cornerstone of St. Martin’s economy. The island attracts visitors with its stunning beaches, luxury resorts, and water sports. Additionally, the port in Philipsburg, the capital of Sint Maarten, is a popular stop for cruise ships. The island also has a growing yachting industry and a robust financial services sector.

Driving is on the right side of the road, but be prepared for narrow, winding streets and occasional traffic near popular tourist areas.

    Bicycles and Scooters
Bicycles and scooters can be rented for short trips and beach hopping. However, due to traffic and road conditions, caution is advised.

    Walking
Walking is practical in smaller towns and beach areas, though good walking shoes and hydration are recommended due to the heat.

    Ferries
For day trips to nearby islands like Anguilla and St. Barthélemy, ferries are available from ports in Marigot and Philipsburg.

    Boats and Charters
Renting a boat or joining a charter is a popular way to explore the coastline and neighboring islands, providing a unique perspective of the area.

      • Navigation: GPS and map apps help you find your way around.
      • Safety: Always lock your vehicle and do not leave valuables visible.
