About Sydney
Sydney is the largest city in Australia, with a population that exceeds 5 million. Rock engravings in Sydney from Aboriginal Australians and historic cultural sites are common in Sydney; these historic findings show that Aboriginal Australians lived in the area over 30,000 years ago. The Eora, Dharawal, and Darug people are the native owners of the land. In addition to its rich cultural history, Sydney is also renowned for its iconic Sydney landmarks that showcase the city’s modern vibrancy and historical significance.
Modern history began when British ships arrived in 1788, and from then until 1900, Sydney was the British colony New South Wales. The local government was established in 1842 when Sydney was formally declared a city. The Australian colonies federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, and this was when Sydney became the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales.
Sydney is the most multicultural area in Australia, with over 31% of the population born outside the county. It’s known for being an international hub for finance and culture. Many international events have occurred in Sydney, including the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Sydney is well known for its beautiful beaches, with over 100 exquisite beaches inside city limits. Surfing, whale watching, kayaking, and snorkeling are just a few activities tourists enjoy doing when visiting. Bondi Beach is Sydney’s most well-known beach, but there are many other local favorites to see, such as Bronte Beach, Gordons Bay, Manly, Palm Beach, Balmoral Beach, Nielsen Park, Watsons Bay, and Camp Cove.
There’s so much more to do in Sydney besides just the beaches. Climbing the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge is a must-do for many visitors, as well as visiting the architectural gem that is the Sydney Opera House. The Rocks is a fun area with art galleries, markets, boutiques, and bars; you’ll love the cobblestone lanes as it is Sydney’s oldest neighborhood.
The Naturally Good Expo, Australia’s only event dedicated to all things 100% organic, is held yearly in Sydney. It’s the largest event in the southern hemisphere for brands, retailers, and practitioners to meet with suppliers for networking, education, and to celebrate the latest in health and wellness. Best Time To visit
December to February is the summer peak season for Sydney, with visitors flocking to the area to take advantage of the warm weather. Hotels and flights will cost more during this time. Events like the official national day of Australia (Australia Day), the significant arts Sydney Festival, and the film festival Tropfest happen during this season.
We vote March to May as one of the best times to visit Sydney, as the city quiets down at this time for autumn. Temperatures will slowly begin to drop, with highs typically in the upper 60s in May. Whale-watching season begins in May, so make sure to bring a light jacket when you hit the water to spot their magnificence. In addition, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is during this season, as well as the spectacular Vivid Sydney event and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
Sydney’s winter season is June-August, and temperatures range between 40 to 60 degrees. Hotels are typically the most affordable during winter. The whale-watching season continues through this time; it ends in November with peaks in July and September. Vivid Sydney continues through June, and other notable events like the Sydney Film Festival, Bondi Feast, and Australian International Music Festival occur during this season. Sydney tends to stay comfortable year-round, so although it’s winter season, it is considered mild compared to winter in most areas of the United States.
September to November is another great time to visit Sydney, as it’s right before peak season, so if you time it right, you should beat the crowds. In addition, it is spring at this time, so the temperatures are warm and lovely. Many events happen during this time, such as the Sydney Fringe Festival, the family kite Festival of the Winds, the food festival Sydney Night Noodle Markets, Sculpture by the Sea, and the Taste of Sydney food festival.

Sydney is not only a cultural hub to experience the arts and festivals but also a place for wellness and well-being.
Things to know
Sydney is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It’s a vibrant city full of culture, history, and stunning views. The iconic landmarks, beaches, and festivals draw in visitors year after year. The Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is not only the busiest in the country but also the main gateway to Australia.
Sydney is a city of early risers. Many cafes open in the early morning, and it’s best to . . . .
enjoy scenic walking trails before the day warms up. However, if you’re a late riser, know that many cafes will serve breakfast all day long. Also, it’s common for restaurants to close by 9 pm, so keep that in mind when planning your day and dinnertime.
Shopping tends to close relatively early in Sydney. In the CBD, shops stay open until around 7 pm, but everywhere else tends to shut down by 5 pm. Thursday is reserved for late-night shopping, with most stores remaining open till 9 pm.
how to get around
Sydney is a walker-friendly city. Although it’s huge, it is also very compact. Most of the Central Business District (CBD) and the suburbs surrounding it are easy to explore on foot. The public transport system in Sydney has a payment system called the Opal, and you can use your Opal card for buses, trains, ferries, and the Light Rail. To avoid being charged the highest amount on your trip, tap on when arriving and off when leaving. You can load your Opal card with money at convenience stores, train stations, and online. Ferries are very popular in Sydney, as they can be the quickest way to get somewhere and likely the most scenic too.
